If you want a sweet and smart large breed dog, look no further than the Bernese Mountain Dog. Our Bernese Mountain Dog photography is below.
Oh that face! They are a favorite family companion all around the world. We had the pleasure of working with Dolly recently. Dolly is a one-year-old Berner that lives in Sunset Hills, Missouri. Bernese dogs are often called Berners. Finn is her companion and soulmate. He is a one-year-old golden retriever (check his photos in our golden retriever portfolio). Together they are quite a load on a walk!
The American Kennel Club says this about the breed:
“Named for the midland region of Switzerland near Bern, the “Berner” is one of four Sennenhund breeds. Sennenhund loosely means “dairy farmer’s dog,” used in many regions of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Farmers and basket weavers depended on Berners to pull milk carts and wagons piled high with textiles. These dogs also helped herd small groups of cattle.
“In 1926 a Kansas farmer was the first to import Bernese Mountain Dogs to the United States. Another try was made in 1936 when a pair of Berners called “Felix” and “Fridy” came to the U.S. The dogs soon proved themselves by saving the farmer’s life when a 350-pound buck attacked and mauled him. Felix and “Frances” (a daughter of Fridy) grabbed the deer off their owner and chased it away.
“One year later, in 1937, the American Kennel Club recognized the breed. The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America (BMDCA) was formed in 1968.”
