General Information
What Services Do Professional Dog Photographers Offer?
Services typically include photo sessions and editing. Some photographers also offer printing, framing and other custom photography services. Most photographers provide digital copies of the most beautiful photos and allow them for personal use.
Why Should I Use a Professional Dog Photographer?

Professional Dog Photographers bring quality, artistic vision and years of experience that are difficult to achieve with casual photography. Think of it as lowering your risk by hiring someone who specializes in capturing unique moments that make your fur baby special.
How Do I Choose the Right Photographer for My Dog?
Beyond experience photographing pets, look for photographers with experience in pet or wildlife photography. Review their portfolios, check reviews and ask about their approach to working with animals. A photographer’s understanding of animal behavior is key to capturing authentic moments with your best friends. Here are samples of the breadth of our work with pets, animals and birds: birds in flight, golden retrievers and wild horses.
Where do you provide your services?
We have photographers serving the St. Louis area (Missouri and Illinois), and Northwest Arkansas in and around Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville and Bella Vista.
How much does it cost to get professional photos of your dog?
There is no single answer to that question. Higher priced services are often from photographers with a wide range of experience with wild animals, birds and pets. Typically, professional pet photographers charge for the time spent planning, shooting, editing and delivering the photos. Look closely at the photographer’s portfolio of work. Can they shoot action shots? What about portraits of the family with the pet? And be sure and interview the photographers. See the details of our family + pet package and pricing.
What are some common mistakes in pet photography?
One of the most common mistakes is not being prepared for the unpredictable nature of pets. Pets are often spontaneous and timing is crucial. Failing to capture natural expressions or overlooking lighting and angles can also result in less compelling photos. Another mistake is not considering the pet’s comfort and temperament, which can significantly affect their behavior during the session.
What makes a successful pet portrait photograph?
A successful pet portrait captures the pet’s true personality. Good lighting, composition and understanding of animal behavior are key elements. The photographer should create a comfortable environment. This will allow the pet to feel at ease while capturing candid or well-composed moments that reflect its character.
What are the responsibilities of a pet photographer?
A professional pet photographer’s main responsibility is to understand and be sensitive to the pet’s behavior. The animal’s well-being and safety should always come first. Additionally, the photographer should create a comfortable atmosphere for both the pet and owner. This includes managing the technical aspects of photography (like lighting, composition and camera settings), and providing high-quality edited images.

Booking and Preparation
How far in advance should I book a session?
It’s best to book your pet photography session at least 2-4 weeks in advance. Demand is highest for outdoor sessions during peak seasons like spring and fall. Booking early also ensures availability for a specific event like a pet birthday or adoption anniversary.
What should I do to prepare my pet for an on-location session?
Bring their favorite treats and toys to keep them engaged. If your pet has a special outfit or accessories, introduce them beforehand so they feel natural wearing it. Consider practicing commands or actions you’d like to capture, like sitting, running or jumping.
Should my pet be groomed before the session?
A fresh grooming session can definitely enhance your pet’s look. However, it is best to schedule grooming a few days before the shoot. That gives your baby’s fur time to settle naturally. If your pet is long-haired, a simple brushing before the session can also make a big difference.
What if my pet has special needs or medical conditions?
Let us know ahead of time if your pet has any medical conditions, mobility issues or behavioral sensitivities. We will customize the session to focus on its comfort and safety. Our team is experienced in handling all types of special needs. We will always prioritize your pet’s well-being.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my outdoor session?
If conditions are unfavorable, we can reschedule to another day or move the session to an indoor location if available.
How do I book a pet photography session?
Booking a session with a professional photographer typically involves reviewing available session options, selecting a date that works for both you and the photographer, and confirming the session details, including location and any special requests. For a full overview of how we plan and structure sessions, visit our family + pet photography page. Some photographers may require a deposit or full payment upfront to secure the booking.
How can I prepare my pet for a photography session?
Preparing your pet for a photography session involves a few simple steps. Start by making sure your pet is well-rested and has had time to lightly exercise beforehand. Think of it like warm-ups for an athlete. If your pet has a special toy or treats, bring those along to keep them engaged. Grooming is also essential to make sure your pet looks its best for the session.
What should I bring to a pet photography session?
Bring your pet’s favorite toys, treats and any accessories or outfits you’d like to include in the shoot. If you’re planning a themed session or special occasion, bring props like a birthday cake, festive decorations or a special blanket. Here are some ideas for a themed photo session with your pet.
It’s also a good idea to bring a friend or family member to help keep your pet calm and focused.

How Long Does It Take to Get My Photos?
Turnaround times vary. It typically takes from one to four weeks, depending on the photographer’s schedule and the extent of editing required. We try to evaluate all the photos as quickly as possible, typically in the first week, and let you see the 15-30 very best from the photo session.
What is a pet photography session like?
A pet photography session is a relaxed and fun experience, both for the pet and the pet parents. Depending on the type of shoot, you may be involved in guiding your pet or simply enjoying the moment while the photographer works. The session will focus on capturing your pet’s natural expressions, whether through playful action shots or more intimate, posed portraits. The photographer will adjust the environment as needed to ensure your pet is comfortable.
Where do the pet photo shoots take place?
They can take place in various settings. Some photographers offer outdoor sessions in natural environments, like parks or your own backyard. Others may work in a studio for more controlled lighting and backgrounds. Choosing a location that suits your pet’s personality and your vision for the photos is key. We specialize in outdoor settings, like our back yard, where the photo below was taken. We also know the two markets we serve–St. Louis and Northwest Arkansas–like the back of our hand. Forest Park or Beaver Lake?

Do I get the digital files?
Yes, the 15-30 best photos from all of the photos taken at the session. These can be downloaded from our online gallery. Many photographers also provide a print release to allow you to share them on social media. Be sure to ask if you’ll receive rights for digital images and clarify how they will be delivered.
Are There Extra Costs?
There can be. For example, the fees charged by most professional dog photographers in St. Louis and Northwest Arkansas cover the following: coordinating the photoshoot, photographing, editing and delivering your photos in two flexible electronic formats (JPG and TIF). However, there can be situations where there may be additional charges. Additional fees can also occur if there are unusually difficult editing requests by the client. We always recommend clients clarify extra costs and fees up front. There are no dumb questions. Here is our standard agreement which all clients must sign.
Understanding Pet Photography
What makes pet photography with families different from other types of photography?
Pet photography requires patience, creativity and a deep understanding of animal behavior. Unlike human portraits, pets don’t always stay still or follow instructions. We use various techniques, including sound triggers, treats and toys to manage the session and capture natural expressions. For a deeper look at how we approach outdoor sessions and real moments, see our article on what makes a great dog photo session. For a deeper look at how we approach outdoor sessions and real moments, see our article on what makes a great outdoor family + dog photo session.
How do professional pet photographers capture a pet’s personality?
We focus on their natural behaviors like a playful jump, a curious head tilt or a relaxed cuddle. Through a mix of candid and posed shots, we will highlight their true personality. We also capture spontaneous moments using different focal lengths, angles and shutter speeds to emphasize their energy and expressions. Owners also play a key role by interacting naturally with their pet, helping to create authentic moments.
What are some common misconceptions about pet photography?
Many people think their pet needs to be perfectly trained for a photoshoot, but that’s not true! We work with pets of all energy levels and temperaments. Our approach focuses on telling a story with every shot. Also, some assume pet photography is only for dogs and cats. Many photographers, including myself, capture a wide variety of animals. For example, take a look at our gallery of alpacas. Yes, alpacas!

Photo Session Options
On-Location vs. Studio Sessions: Pros and Cons
On-location shoots offer natural light and backgrounds and candid moments. On the other hand, studio sessions have controlled lighting and settings, often for pet portraits and family photos. Choose based on your pet’s comfort and your aesthetic preferences. Get more insight from our article on the Ultimate Guide for a Successful Dog Photography Shoot.
Can I ask for specific poses or settings?
Absolutely. Professional dog photographers should welcome your feedback and will collaborate to achieve the vision you have for your pet’s portraits.
When should I do an end-of-life photo session with my pet?
There’s no right or wrong answer to this. The “when” of this decision is based on the dog’s situation and condition. On the other hand, the “what” we do is fluid. Most important, we recommend doing what the dog will enjoy. For example, it can be simply resting on the couch in your arms or on a short walk. There are no rules.
We have been through this scenario before. Often, time is of the essence and we will move mountains to get done what you want. This is an emotional and personal time, and we are here to support you. Learn more in our article on end-of-life pet photography.
Practical Tips

What are some photography tips for capturing your pet with your camera?
There is a lot to it, but here are the high points:
- Get Down to Their Level. This is important. This helps create more engaging, intimate shots, as it reflects their perspective. Kneel or lie down to get eye-level with your pet rather than taking the photo from above. One of the best purchases we have made is a high quality pair of knee pads.
- Use Natural Light. Whenever possible, opt for natural light. Pets look best when they’re in soft, even light. Also, when possible avoid harsh midday sun or artificial lighting. Try shooting near windows or outdoors during the “golden hour” (early morning or late afternoon) for beautiful, flattering lighting. Learn more in our in-depth article about the power of natural light for pet photography.
- Focus on the Eyes. As with people, the eyes are the focal point in pet portraits. Make sure your camera is focused on your pet’s eyes for a sharp, clear image. This helps convey emotion and adds depth to the photo.
- Use Fast Shutter Speeds. Pets can be quick and unpredictable, especially in action shots. To prevent motion blur, use a fast shutter speed (at least 1/1000th of a second to be safe). This will help capture your pet’s movements crisply and clearly.
- Play with Angles and Perspectives. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different angles. Try photographing your pet from above, behind or in profile. This will produce more dynamic, creative shots. Also, different perspectives can tell a unique story about your pet.
- Capture Candid Moments. Sometimes the best shots happen when your pet is unaware of the camera. Be patient and take photos of your pet while they’re playing, interacting or resting.
- Bring Out Your Pet’s Personality. Think about your pet’s quirks and traits that make them special. Whether they’re playful, sleepy or always running around, look for the moments that show off their unique personality.
- Keep the Camera Steady. If you’re using a smartphone, it’s easy to get shaky shots. Hold the camera steady and make sure it’s in focus before snapping the picture.
- Use Burst Mode for Action Shots. If your pet is very active, switching your camera to burst mode can help. This takes several photos in quick succession, increasing the chances of capturing the perfect moment.
- Take Your Time. Don’t rush your photoshoot. Pets often need a little time to settle in, and trying to force them into a specific pose can lead to stress for both you and your pet. Be patient, let them feel comfortable, and take multiple shots to ensure you get the best one.
Be ready with your camera to capture spontaneous moments. Use treats or toys to hold your pet’s attention and choose comfortable, familiar settings to keep them relaxed.

How do you handle uncooperative pets?
With a big dose of patience. For example, we will take breaks and use techniques to keep your pet engaged and comfortable throughout the session. It is not unusual to have sessions planned where the dog is off leash. However, external conditions or the dog’s behavior can require switching to on-leash.
Professional Cameras vs. Smartphones
While smartphones have excellent cameras, professional equipment provides superior image quality, especially for large prints. Check out the camera we use, the Nikon Z9. Also, There is much more information in our article on action pet photography.
Should we include family (and other pets)?
Yes! We encourage it. Including family members in pet photos adds a personal touch and highlights the bond between pets and their human companions. Also, having a second pet can add a real dynamic component to the moment, as the photo above proves.
How do I prepare my pet for a photography session?
To ensure a smooth photography session, it’s helpful to keep your pet’s routine consistent before the shoot. Make sure they are comfortable with the environment and bring any items that make them feel at ease. For example, this could be a favorite toy or blanket. A relaxed pet will result in more natural and genuine photos.
Pet Photography Styles and Trends
What are the latest trends in pet photography?
Pet photography is evolving, with unique styles like action shots, documentary-style storytelling, outdoor photography and creative portraiture becoming increasingly popular. For example, themed sessions for holidays and milestone celebrations are also in demand. Also, black-and-white pet portraits offer a timeless aesthetic, while fine art pet photography focuses on dramatic lighting and composition. Lasty, adventure photography, capturing pets on hiking trails or in natural landscapes, is also a growing trend.

What’s the difference between traditional portraits and lifestyle pet photography?
Traditional portraits focus on posed images with clean backgrounds. Lifestyle photography tells a story through images, captures candid moments of your pet in its natural environment. Lifestyle shots often include outdoor photography in natural light.
Can I do a themed or seasonal photoshoot for my pet?
Yes! Themed sessions are a great way to make your pet’s photos unique and memorable. For example, we have seen holiday setups, pet birthday celebrations and adventure-style shoots be successful. Here are some other ideas from our recent article on themed photoshoots for pets.
Custom Requests and Special Circumstances
Can I include my pet in a family portrait session?

Can I order extra prints or albums later?
Absolutely! Your online gallery will remain available for a set period, allowing you to purchase more products at your convenience.
Do professional dog photographers offer retouching or advanced editing?
Yes, most do some type of post-production work. All of the best images from our projects receive professional editing, including color correction and light retouching. Advanced edits, such as leash removal or background adjustments, are available upon request. See our recent article on professional photo editing.
If we go outside I don’t feel comfortable taking my dog off its leash. But I also don’t want the leash in the photograph. What are the options?
We use the most sophisticated photo editing software in the world, Photoshop from Adobe. One of its many amazing features is to “remove” objects. Put it this way: we have never met a leash (or collar) we couldn’t remove!
What are the best ways to display pet portraits in my home?
Custom canvases, framed prints and photo books are our favorites. We will work with you to determine the best size, format and “look” that is best for your home. Check out how we approach framing in our Custom Photography Services.
What makes Outdoor Pet Photography different from other pet photographers?
We don’t try to be all things to all people. No weddings for us. Or client events. We love the outdoors and we love animals. Our photographic start several decades ago was sports, mostly outdoors. Then we discovered landscape photography. Then came wild animals and birds. Now pets.
We are experts in outdoor photography. We understand natural light like the back of our hand. And our equipment is second to none. In short, we love what we do and our goal is to capture your fur baby at its best.
Business and Legal Questions
Do I own the copyright to the photos?
No. As the photographer, we retain the copyright, but clients receive a personal-use license to print and share their images. Commercial usage requires separate licensing.
Can I use my pet’s photos for commercial purposes?
We typically don’t allow that, but there are exceptions. We are happy to discuss it with you.
What should I know about contracts and model releases?
Before the session, clients sign a photography services agreement. This details our joint responsibilities and includes a model release that allows us to use images for portfolio and promotional purposes. The generic agreement is available for your to review in advance. A specific agreement will be provided for your project and must be signed in advance.
