Family and dog photographer in Columbia, Illinois

This golden retriever has turned around to make sure her owner is close behind on this walk in a secluded park.

Columbia is one of the most scenic towns in the Metro East, with rolling hills, quiet neighborhoods, and easy access to trails and river views. It’s a beautiful place for relaxed outdoor pet and family photography, especially for dogs who enjoy space and fresh air.

With places like the Dupo–Columbia Trail, local parks, and nearby open spaces, Columbia gives us natural light and calm settings where dogs and families can be themselves.

👉 Most Columbia families choose one of our two signature experiences:

Family & Pet Session – relaxed outdoor photos of your whole family with your dog
Platinum Story Session – for dogs whose personalities deserve to become wall-worthy art

Our favorite photo spots in Columbia

Metter Park. Right in the heart of Columbia, this park has a small lake, shaded paths, and an open field perfect for casual walking shots or relaxed portraits. The weeping willows along the waterline are especially beautiful in spring and early fall.

Bolm-Schuhkraft Park. This is Columbia’s biggest public park. It offers sports fields and open grassy areas that offer a nice mix of settings. It’s a great place for sessions that need variety—especially with active dogs.

Historic Main Street. For something a little different, Columbia’s Main Street is a great option. Its old-town feel adds visual texture without too much hustle. Ideal for leash-trained dogs who feel confident in areas with more people.

Nearby parks and locations worth considering

Diederich Park (Waterloo). Just a short drive down Route 3. This is a spacious, dog-friendly option with shaded paths and fewer crowds. A great choice if your dog prefers a quieter setting.

Cliff Cave Park (South St. Louis County). It is just across the Jefferson Barracks Bridge on the Missouri side. Cliff Cave offers sweeping river views, wooded trails, and wide-open space. If you’re from Columbia you already know about this cool spot.

Sniffspot Parks (Private Rentals). Sniffspot offers private, fully fenced yards for rent by the hour in and around Columbia. These spaces provide safe, off-leash play without the park crowds. See Columbia Sniffspot options.

Gracie’s Corner: Columbia is the cat’s meow

A road trip to Columbia always gets me going. I love going over the bridge… yeah, we live in Missouri.

  • Metter Park has that small-town charm I live for. There’s a lake, a breeze, and ducks that probably don’t need chasing (but I’m still thinking about it). It’s quiet, shady, and the light is usually just right.
  • Bolm-Schuhkraft Park is where I do my cardio. You want mid-run action shots? This is my go-to. I like to run big loops, stop suddenly, and then pose like I’ve been calm the whole time.
  • Main Street is my model moment. I don’t always strut down sidewalks, but when I do, it’s on Columbia’s Main Street. It’s peaceful, charming, and the red brick brings out the gold in my coat.

What do you think of my uber-cool cowlick (see at top of my head)?

Gracie: There are many great photo location options outside of Columbia

I’ve been every where man, I’ve been every where. I know that’s a song, but I thought it was cute here.

Here are the other cities in the metro east I like visiting (with links to their pages): Belleville, Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, O’Fallon, and Shiloh.

And don’t forget to contact my daddy about photographing your furry friend(s). He’s real nice (he’s my daddy if I didn’t mention it)!.

Frequently Asked Questions-FAQs (Columbia, IL)

Do you only photograph in Columbia, IL?
No. We provide pet and family photography sessions throughout the metro east and St. Louis market (Missouri and Illinois), and in St. Charles and its surrounding areas. We are happy to accommodate your preferred setting.

What if my dog can’t be off-leash during the session?
Safety for your best friend is our top priority. It’s common for most public parks to require your beloved pets to be on-leash. Here’s great news: our sophisticated photo editing software can, in most cases, remove leashes and collars. Easy peasy.

Can we do the session at our home?
Yes. It is especially beneficial for dogs who are a little shy or do best in familiar surroundings.

Can we include family members in the shoot?
Of course. Be aware some photographers charge more to add family members and additional pets. Learn more about our Family and Pet Portrait Package.

Is your golden retriever Gracie really an employee?

Great question. Yes! Wheels don’t turn at Outdoor Pet Photography Services without Gracie having a paw on it. Don’t tell anyone but it’s possible we have skirted a few child labor laws (Gracie just turned four!). We have our legal department running this down.
